Vending Machine History and Use

Filed under: Interesting — Tags: — Bradley Fraser @ 12:50 pm

A vending machine is a coin-actuated machine in which many goods are retailed. Vending machines are sometimes taken for coin-actuated amusement games or juke machines.

The initial commercial usage of vending machines was early in the 18th century in England, when coin-operated “honour boxes” were utilized to retail snuff and tobacco.

These machines were also utilized by the British-American civilisations later in the time. The initial targeted, business employment of vending machines happened in the United States circa 1888, at which time machines were employed to push the sales of chewing gum to townships in which gum sales otherwise could not be made, including the platforms of the NYC elevated railway.

The US industry was held for the most part to penny-candy sales before 1926, at which point the modern standard of automatic retailing began at the appearance of cigarette vending machines. The first known soft-drink vending machine followed in 1937.

As the Americas began its military buildup prior to its position with the second World War, plant boards realised that people could not continue effectively for 10, 12, or further hours if not allowed a lunch point, at which time vending machines were the most practical process of arranging food and drink.

During the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine market was focused in plants and factories, and by the end of that time, devices were being utilized to retail a whole variety of freshly provided along with prepackaged items to replace and supplement ordinary in-plant food providing processes.

Refrigeration was developed in vending machines to retail bottled soft drinks. The ability of vending devices to vend items at discounted costs 24/7 without requiring regard to holidays is in modern times internationally understood.

The commercialisation has gone beyond plants and factories, and devices are often placed in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and other such locations.

Commonly, vending services are provided by companies (operators) that own and place vending devices on locations owned by others. Those businesses provide whole upkeep and repair, as well as items for sale, commonly without fees to the owners of the premises except perhaps a servicing fee.Vending devices are in use in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia since the 1880s, at the time when they were used to vend confectionery or tobacco products.

In current times, the vending machine business in those countries has closely reflected the development of vending in the States.

Vending in Japan originated rapidly in the 1960s and furthered enthusiastically to an iconic factor in their distribution methods.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Filed under: Interesting — Tags: — Bradley Fraser @ 11:59 am

Bring a plastic water bottle to your own peril; the sway of popular perspective is going away from you. From big rating documentaries, to books and campaigns, the hot topic on the soapbox is the horror around bottled water and the waste of resources that the industry forces.

The production, moving and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles eats up huge quantities of water and energy, and creates large measures of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the hot new documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig sums it up “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are plugging the documentary with an across-America roadshow, receiving donations from citizens to reduce their water bottle use and exchanging their used plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

A short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. From Annie Leonard of the famous ‘The Story of Stuff’, this animation shows the method that amounts to swaying Americans into wasting at least half a billion bottles of water a week, despite the option of a few cents cost for clean tap water. See this new animation on You Tube.

In her book ‘Bottlemania’, author Elizabeth Royte demonstrates one of the biggest marketing takeovers of our century and gives a strong environmental alarm bell. She investigates the questions we must at some point deal with. Who distributes our water distribution? What could happen when a bottled-water corporation seizes your town’s source? Is the water coming from your tap entirely safe? What really is the environmental cost of producing, transporting and waste of every plastic water bottle?

Politicians from everywhere around the globe are realising that they must start the campaign – notably when the meetings where they collate are major consumers of bottled water. How often do we see a politician in a meeting sipping from a water bottle. It is probable that they can use a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, held that “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first place from Australia to ban the retailing of bottled water. About 60 towns in the United States and a few cities in Canada and the United Kingdom have recently banned the spending of taxpayer funds on bottled water.

Surely this problem will be discussed in World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the world’s most urgent water-related issues.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is basically destructive; at the time of the process of fostering data, the sample is destroyed. While this is excusable when a large sample of the sample material exists, nondestructive procedures are desirable for materials that are expensive or arduous to create or that have been made into completed or semicompleted products.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive test, utilized to find surface cracks and imperfections in samples, takes a penetrating liquid, which is either luminescently coloured or fluorescent. After being painted on the surface of the metal sample and allowed to soak into any perceptible flaws, the fluid is rubbed away, leaving totally visible imperfections and weaknesses. An analogous method, used for nonmetals, requires an electrically charged fluid pasted on the sample surface. After the extra liquid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the nonmetal and attracted to the flaws. Neither of these processes, however, can detect internal weaknesses.

Radiation

Internal, like external weaknesses, can be detected through the use of X-ray or gamma-ray techniques in which the radiation scans the material and implicates on a subject photographic film. In some cases, it may be possible to focus the X rays on a particular plane in the material, allowing a 3rd dimensional description of the flaw geometry along with its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts requires transmission of sound waves above human hearing range within the sample. Under the reflection process, a sound wave is targeted from one end of the subject, reflected from the opposite area, and returned back to a receiver that is located at the starting area. When isolating a break or weak point in the piece, the sound wave is reflected and its transmission disrupted. The actual delay then becomes a measure of the location of the flaw; a map of the test piece can be made to reveal the area and geometry of the flaws. In the through-transmission method, the transmitter and receiver need to be located on the opposite parts of the subject; interruptions in the signal of the sound waves are utilized to target and measure imperfections. Usually a water medium is used in which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a material are largely reflected by its overall structure, magnetic processes are utilized to measure the location and approximate geometry of failures and imperfections. With magnetic testing, a tool is utilized that holds a large coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held inside this larger coil is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the larger coil generates current to charge within the secondary coil by way of the process of induction. When an iron sample is put into the secondary coil, sudden changes in the further current can signal imperfections in the rod. This technique only locates changes within parts on the length of a rod and cannot find elongated or continued flaws that readily. A similar technique, employing eddy currents induced with a primary coil, also can be utilized to isolate errors and weaknesses. A steady current is induced in part of the test item. Flaws that are found within the transmission of the current make for resistance of the test object; this alteration may be measured under appropriate items.

Infrared

Infrared techniques have sometimes been used to detect material continuity in involved constructual materials. While testing the value of adhesive joins between the sandwich core and facing sheets by a usual sandwich construction material like plywood, for example, heat is used against the face of the sandwich skin material. Where bond lines appear to be continuous, the core parts allow a heat depression in the surface sample, and the local temperatures of the skin should drop steadily on the bond lines. In the case that the bond line may be too small, disappears, or mistaken, however, the local temperature can not drop. Infrared photography of the front does isolate the situation and area of the flawed adhesive. Another such process utilizes thermal coatings to change hue on reaching a devised degree.

In conclusion, nondestructive test processes also are sometimes sought to show a total study of the mechanical characteristics of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal methods appear to be most trustworthy in this situation.
