Vending Machine History and Use

Filed under: Interesting — Tags: — Bradley Fraser @ 12:50 pm

A vending machine is a coin-operated object through which various objects are sold. Vending machines are sometimes confused with coin-operated amusement arcade games or music radios.

The first commercial usage of vending machines came early in the 18th century in England, at which point coin-actuated “honour boxes” were employed to sell snuff and tobacco.

These machines were also used by the British-American communities during the century. The initial demonstrative, marketed use of vending machines happened in the United States circa 1888, when devices were utilized to expand the sales of chewing gum in townships where gum sales otherwise could not be made, like the waiting areas of the New York City elevated railway.

The US industry was restricted largely to penny-candy retail from then until 1926, at which point the modern occurrence of automatic retailing was opened in the appearance of cigarette vending machines. The first known soft-drink vending machine was developed circa 1937.

While the United States started its weaponry buildup prior to its admission in World War II, plant managements determined that people could not continue efficiently for 10, 12, or further hours without a refreshment time, at which time vending machines proved the most ready process of giving food and beverages.

During the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine industry was concentrated in plants and factories, and by the end of that period, devices were being exploited to vend a larger variety of freshly packaged as well as prepackaged edibles to take the place of and supplement original in-plant food service mechanisms.

Refrigeration was established in vending devices to retail bottled soft drinks. The ability of vending devices to sell products for discounted costs at any time without requiring regard to breaks is now widely utilized.

The industry has moved above plants and factories, and devices are readily seen in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and many other locations.

Commonly, vending machines are provided by corporations (operators) that own and put vending machines at premises owned by others. The corporations provide complete maintenance and care, as well as items for sale, often without any cost to the owners of the premises except sometimes a servicing price.Vending devices are in use in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia from the 1880s, at which point they were made use of to sell candy and tobacco items.

During recent times, the vending machine industry in these countries has closely paralleled the marketing of vending machines in the United States.

Vending in Japan started rapidly in the 1960s and developed rapidly to an iconic aspect in their distribution methods.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Filed under: Interesting — Tags: — Bradley Fraser @ 11:59 am

Take a plastic water bottle at your own peril; the sway of public perspective is going against you. From high rating documentaries, to the written word and politics, the biggest topic in our lives is the horror that is bottled water and the waste of resources that the industry creates.

The production, transportation and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles demands large amounts of water as well as energy, and pumps out huge amounts of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the new documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig says “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The crew behind Tapped are promoting the documentary with an across-America roadshow, collecting pledges from Americans to lower their water bottle waste and changing their used plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

A short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the famous ‘The Story of Stuff’, this animated film shows the process that is used to swaying Americans into wasting around five hundred million bottles of water each and every week, instead of a few cents cost for water from the tap. Check out this documentary on You Tube.

Through her book ‘Bottlemania’, writer Elizabeth Royte investigates one of the greatest marketing heists of the last century and gives a strong environmental alarm bell. She investigates the questions we must at some point deal with. Who has ownership of our water distribution? What happens when a bottled-water factory stakes a claim on your town’s drinking water? Is the water that comes out of the tap wholly safe? What is really the environmental price of making, transporting and waste of every plastic water bottle?

Politicians from all around the international community are realising that they must start the campaign – notably when the institutions at which they work are major consumers of bottled water. How often do we see a politician in a function drinking from a water bottle. Why can’t they might use a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, stated “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first place of Australia to ban the retailing of bottled water. About 60 towns in the US and a few cities in Canada and the UK have lately stopped expending taxpayer funds on bottled water.

It is certain that these issues will be brought to the table during World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the world’s most time-sensitive water-related dilemmas.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is inherently futile; during the process of collecting research, the sample is ruined. While this is permissible when a safe sample of the sample material exists, nondestructive tests are desirable for materials that are expensive or difficult to fabricate or that have been formed into finished or semicompleted samples.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive procedure, utilized to detect surface cracks and flaws in samples, employs a penetrating liquid, either visibly coloured or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the material and left to impress into any small flaws, the liquid is rubbed away, leaving readily revealed imperfections and flaws. An analogous test, applicable to nonmetals, uses an electrically charged liquid painted on the material surface. After the extra fluid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the surface of the sample and draws to the breaks. Neither of these methods, however, can identify internal imperfections.

Radiation

Internal, like external imperfections, can be identified with X-ray or gamma-ray technologies in which the radiation passes through the sample and impinges on an ideal photographic film. Occasionally, it is possible to focus the X rays toward a particular section in the metal, creating a three-dimensional perspective of the flaw geometry along with its position.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of sections involves transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the material. Under the reflection process, a sound wave is targeted over one part of the test material, reflected by the other side, and returned into a receiver situated at the beginning side. When isolating a mark or crack in the material, the signal is reflected and its traveling time adapted. The actual delay is then a sign of the location of the mark; a map of the test material can be formed to locate the area and form of the cracks. By the through-transmission method, the transmitter and receiver are placed on opposite areas of the subject; delays in the transmission of sound waves are utilized to locate and measure weaknesses. Sometimes a water medium is used by which transmitter, sample, and receiver should be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a test piece are heavily shown by its overall form, magnetic methods can be employed to reveal the placement and indicative shape of failures and cracks. In magnetic testing, an apparatus is used that holds a large coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held within this primary wire is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the first coil makes current to move in the secondary coil by way of the technique of induction. When an iron sample is slotted into the secondary coil, acute changes in the secondary current can signal flaws in the sample. This technique only finds differentiations between zones along the length of a sample and cannot locate long or continued marks very easily. Another such method, using eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also may be employed to find flaws and cracks. A steady current is induced in part of the test subject. Cracks that exist across the signal of the current make for resistance of the test piece; this change will then be measured with suitable items.

Infrared

Infrared processes also have been utilized to detect material continuity in involved structural objects. By testing the quality of adhesive joints in the sandwich core and facing sheets with a typical sandwich construct sample such as plywood, for example, heat is applied to the face of the sandwich skin item. When bond lines are continuous, those core areas reveal a heat depression on the surface material, and the general temperatures of the face will spread spaciously along these bond lines. In the case that a bond line is not enough, gone, or erroneous, however, local temperature should not drop. Infrared photography of the face can then reveal the placement and shape of the erroneous adhesive. A similar method utilizes thermal coatings to change hue when reaching a specific temperature.

Lastly, nondestructive processes also are now being seen to permit a total understanding of the mechanical characteristics of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal processes seem most reliable in this circumstance.
